HEARSAY, a new downtown Cary cocktail bar, will be serving classic and signature cocktails, beer, wine, and charcuterie in the serene setting of The Matthews House.
The Matthews House has always wanted to share the stately house and its lovely gardens with their neighbors and with partner Southern Harvest Hospitality Group, opened Prohibitive in 2022. With The Matthews House taking over full operations, Prohibitive closed to make infrastructure changes and owner Sarah Chung decided the fresh start needed a rebrand. Hearsay is a refresh of the Prohibitive concept: a cocktail bar tucked away in the manicured gardens of a Southern estate. Hearsay derives its name from the secret garden vibe of the venue. Nestled behind an ornate brick fence, the property feels like a secluded oasis, despite being located in the up and coming bustle of downtown Cary.
As a weeknight getaway, Hearsay offers an opportunity for after-work gatherings or a night-cap after an evening enjoying other Downtown Cary offerings. Hearsay hopes to draw visitors to the West side of Chatham Street as Downtown Cary’s nightlife expands.
Built as a private residence in 1915, The Matthews House was converted into a wedding and special events venue at the turn of the century. It offers a charming Southern house, immaculate gardens, and a grand ballroom as a serene setting for a variety of events and meetings.
The Matthews House will continue to host weddings and special events, but starting April 17th, 2024, Hearsay will be open to the public, sharing this magical space on weekdays at 4pm. Hearsay will also host special events such as live music and wine pairings, which will be announced on social media and the website.
