Announcing PROHIBITIVE: a weekday hideaway cocktail bar in Downtown Cary

It all started when, after a day of working at The Matthews House, Sarah would make herself a cocktail and unwind on the house’s long, wrap-around porch. It was quiet and serene to drink among the gardens, occasionally punctuated by the train whistle that’s become a trademark of Downtown Cary. “This is so nice,” she said to her husband, “We should make this available to our neighbors.”

Prohibitive was born. With our catering partner, Southern Harvest Hospitality Group, we’ve developed a weekday hideaway inside The Matthews House, full of cozy nooks and corners that is intimate for date nights, comforting for old friends, or an upscale meet to impress some clients. Prohibitive serves up classic cocktails and a menu of delectable share plates that serves as an afterwork pregame or a post-dinner nightcap.

Between our two Marks: chef Mark Mishalanie and bar manager Mark Miller, we gave our creative team plenty of playspace, so expect a constantly changing menu of experiments and inside jokes as we make Prohibitive a home, sweet, home.

Prohibitive will be open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4pm until 10pm, unless we have a private event. Look for the sign in the parking lot at 317 W. Chatham St., Cary, NC 27511.

PRESS RELEASE

Prohibitive, a “Weekday Hideaway” Opens in Downtown Cary

Enjoy classic cocktails and delectable share plates at a renowned Cary location.

CARY, NC — September 8, 2022.

PROHIBITIVE is a new bar and restaurant hideaway opening in downtown Cary. Hosted by The Matthews House and Southern Harvest Hospitality Group, PROHIBITIVE will be serving classic cocktails, beer, wine, and share plates in the serene setting of a Southern manor and its manicured gardens.

The Matthews House will continue to host weddings and special events, but starting September 8, 2022, will host PROHIBITIVE at limited hours: Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4pm until 10pm. PROHIBITIVE will also open for special pop-up concepts, which will be announced on social media. Look for our sign or check social media for all on-going information.

PROHIBITIVE started when The Matthews House co-owner, Sarah Chung, would unwind with a cocktail on the long, stately porch and wanted to share that experience. “It’s a classic Southern house, so why not gather our neighbors to enjoy classic cocktails tucked away in this cozy atmosphere?” Chung asked.

Coupled with share plates, PROHIBITIVE offers an opportunity for after-work gatherings or a night-cap after an evening enjoying other Downtown Cary offerings. PROHIBITIVE hopes to draw visitors to the West side of Chatham Street as Downtown Cary’s nightlife expands.

”PROHIBITIVE gives us the chance to be creative with food, drinks, and ambiance,” adds Chef Mark Mishalanie.PROHIBITIVE derives its name and concept from the days of Prohibition, when friends and neighbors met and shared foods while sneaking in a little “nip” now and again.

Following the repeal of Prohibition, appetizer plates, craft cocktails and small dinner parties became the rage. PROHIBITIVE honors that movement and features some of those same cocktails and principles.

Built as a private residence in 1905, The Matthews House was converted into a wedding and special events venue at the turn of the century. It offers a charming Southern house, immaculate gardens, and a grand ballroom as a serene setting for a variety of events and meetings.

Since 1992, Southern Harvest Hospitality Group has pursued its mission to love and nourish their guests through fine catering and restaurants, including Sprout Cafe / Elements Coffee House at the NC Museum of Life and Science and catering events at venues across the Triangle.
